The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of numerous the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler arising; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and clear fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most negative of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both humility and faith, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
